Custom Modifications Information

After a small collision between the Honda and some variety of Oldsmobuick, considerable damage was done to the front left quarterpanel, blinker and headlight. One of the Honda's first custom mods was to attach a new blinker bulb and cover. New wiring, wire-nuts, electrical tape and sheet metal screws made the Honda street-legal again.

A front view of the headlight shows the damage from the collision. Minor adjustments are made to the springs which tension the headlight whenever the Honda's windshield is washed, oil is changed, etc.

The Honda has been broken into four times, three of the Honda's custom mods are repairs done in response to these actions. After the first burglary a good portion of the dashboard was broken in order to steal my Pioneer Cassette Deck. Removal of the lower part of the dash along with the glove box made for the most effiecient solution. Multiple stereo shelves have been installed - all lacking in the quality of the current mod shown here. The plywood supports the weight of the stereo and the angle iron holds it firmly in place when rounding corners.

Being broken in a number of places the dash took on a serious rattling problem which was triggered by road and engine vibration. A simple sheet metal screw driven through the problematic portion of the dash into the door frame quells the noise.

Someone standing on the hood of the car managed to break the original nozzle from which windshield wiper fluid sprays onto the window. In order to keep the passenger side of the window clean a new nozzle was fashioned out of copper tube. The nozzle was then fitted onto the original tube and mounted to the housing with a small piece of metal and some screws. Tests were then done, crimping the end of the nozzle with a pliers to limit the amount of fluid sprayed.

This roofrack was custom built by the original owner of the car for his previous car (Original Yellow Volkswagen Beetle) and then passed along to me with the vehicle. A few coats of stain and polyurethane, some new straps and suction cups and the Honda is ready to carry gear.

After driving the Honda for over a year with a broken out left-rear triangular window due to burglars, replacing the window became necessary. The first attempt at an oak board worked until it rattled loose and fell out. Drastic measures were necessary. A piece of corrugated Lexan was die-cut to fit into the space, the original rubber fittings were re-used and then the whole thing was siliconed watertight.

Seeing as how the car is 15+ years old, the original trunk liner and flooring has long since rotted and been discarded. The most recent modification to the Honda was to replace the flooring with custom-cut 1/2" plywood flooring. This is then covered with a heavy-duty rug. All repair and emergency items are stored below the flooring along with the spare, leaving ample room atop for all your packing needs.
